Description:

Thomas Shingler's Charity deed: indenture between the Master and Four Wardens of the "Fraternitie of the arte or misterie of haberdashers" in the City of London and Thomas Shingler of London, citizen and haberdasher, witnessing the investment of £100 in the Haberdasher's Company (delivered by TS "as of his free guifte") in consideration whereof the Company is to pay a yearly annual sum of £5 from the investment to be distributed thus: (a) £4 15s. to be paid annually to the parson and churchwardens of Rugby ["Rookbey"], trustees, between the 1st and 15th Dec at the "Common Hall" of the Company in London to be disposed of and employed by them to and for the charitable purposes declared viz. for the buying of 20d. bread "to be weeklie on the Sabaoth daie in the parishe Church ... ymediatelie after dyvine service in the forenoone given and distributed in Peny doale ... amongst the aged poore of the parishe who shall repaire thether to dyvine service and which have byn of good and honest conversacion" (to amount to £4 6s. 8d. in the year); and that the trustees should procure "Some godlie Preacher to make a Sermon in the ... parishe Church yerelie on the Saterdaie next after the feast daie of the Epiphanie ... and in his Prayer to praise for [the Fraternity] ... unto the happy contynuance of that fraternitie as benefactors to the Towne and present exercise by the speciall guifte of [TS] ... After thend of which Sermon [the trustees] ... shall geve and paie unto the said Preacher ... [6s. 8d.] And also ... geve and distribute amonst the aged poore people of that parishe that shall resort to that Sermon [20d. of bread: the remainder of the £4 15s.]"; with provisoes re distribution to be made only to poor people of 12 years residence.

 

(b) the residue of 5s. to be paid annually thus: 3s. 4d. to the 4 wardens of the Company, 1s. 4d. to the clerk of the Company and 4d. to his clerk or servant.
