Administrative / biographical background: |
These records, emanating mainly from the master of the Union Workhouse [later Kedington Institution] and the Relieving Officer for the Haverhill District, should, strictly speaking, be split into three collections, reflecting the changes in the authority administering the institution, viz, 1896-1930 Risbridge Poor Law Guardians 1930-1948 West Suffolk County Council, through its Public Assistance Committee 1948-1959 West Suffolk Area Health Authority The workhouse itself was redesignated the Kedington Institution in 1930 and from then until 1948 housed the aged and mentally ill; in 1948 it became a mental hospital. As so many of the records overlap the 'change-over' years of 1930 and 1948, the whole collection has been treated as a unit. The records have been listed as far as possible under the title of the official who created them or was responsible for their safe-keeping. |
