Administrative / biographical background: |
From its inception in 1771 the Taunton Circuit included Wellington and subsequently, Dunkeswell, Hemyock, Milverton and Wiveliscombe. In 1833 this group of societies was formed into the Wellington Circuit, but was re-united with the Taunton (Wesleyan) Circuit in 1840. It remained thus until 1886 when the group reverted to a separate circuit, and has remained so. The Bible Christians - who started in 1849 at Scotts' Lane Bethel Chapel-moved in 1899 to Waterloo Road where, in 1907, they became the United Methodists. They remained part of the Taunton Ebenezer circuit until Methodist Union in 1932 when they became part of the United Wellington Methodist Circuit. References to Wellington Methodism can be found by looking in lists D\N\tmc and DD\X\HYA in the Somerset Record Office, and under TIVERTON in the Devon Record Office. Because the Wellington Circuit straddles the Somerset/Devon border, Hemyock and Dunkeswell may also be traced in the Devon Record Office. At the same time, Hemyock, although in Devon, is included as part of the Wellington Registration District. i.e.: 1851 Ecclesiastical census returns for Hemyock are included in the Wellington district returns. |
