Administrative / biographical background: |
Devonport High School for boys was founded in 1896 under the auspices of Alonzo J Ryder, who became the first headmaster. The original school building was in Albert Road, Devonport, with room for 25 boarders. It had 11 1/2 acres of playing fields. Mr A Treseder was headmaster from 1906-1932. There were 94 boys at the school in 1906. A Literary and Debating Society was formed in 1910 and an Officer Training Cadet corps in 1915. During the Second World War the school was evacuated to Penzance. In 1946 the school moved to the former Stoke Military Hospital, Plymouth. |
