According to Kelly's Directories of Essex , 1878-1937 the Lexden and Winstree Petty Sessional Division comprised the following parishes for this period:

Abberton, Aldham, West Bergholt, Birch, Brightlingsea, Mount Bures, Boxted, Chapel, Wakes Colne, Copford, Dedham, East Donyland, Easthorpe, Fingringhoe, Fordham, Great Horkesley, Little Horkesley, Langenhoe, Langham, Layer Breton, Layer-de-la-Haye, Layer Marney, East Mersea, West Mersea, Peldon, Stanway, Great Tey, Marks Tey, Great Wigborough, Little Wigborough, Wivenhoe and Wormingford. The parishes of Salcott and Virley formed part of the Lexden and Winstree Division, 1878-1933 but in 1937 they are listed as part of the Witham Division. Little Tey formed part of the Lexden and Winstree Division from c.1886. For 1878-1882 Little Tey is listed as part of the Witham Division.

The Petty Sessional Division of Lexden and Winstree was closely associated with the Petty Sessions for the Borough of Colchester, as can be seen in the similarity of the form and content of the examination books for each division. Both courts were held at the Town Hall in Colchester and several of the Borough magistrates were also county magistrates for the Lexden and Winstree Division.
