Administrative / biographical background:

The Borough of Bolton, as incorporated in 1838, was granted a separate Court of Quarter Sessions on 9th May 1839. The jurisdiction of the Court was limited to the confines of the Borough as originally incorporated and as extended in 1872, 1877 and 1898. Owing to a prolonged dispute concerning the validity of the Borough Charter, the Court transacted virtually no business between January 1840 and October 1842. During that period, and in the years before 1839, cases from Bolton were usually heard by the Lancashire County Quarter Sessions, held by adjournment for the Hundred of Salford, at Salford or Manchester.
