This collection of papers relating to the sea-going career of James Paul Wood includes three continuous certificates of discharge issued by the Board of Trade to James Paul Wood showing service on the SS Scoresby, SS Runswick, SS Brinkburn, SS Britannic, SS Fylingdale, SS Saltwick, SS Empire Falcon, SS Glaisdale, SS Samindoro, SS Pikepool, SS Domby, SS Sugar Transporter, MV Flowergate, SS Tonegate, MV Parkgate, MV Redgate, SS Baxtergate, MV Iron Age, MV Ripon, MV Ribblehead, Romanby, SS Corstream, MV Monskgarth, MV Queensgarth, SS Corfen, MV Otterburn, MV Border Terrier, MV Afghanistan, MV Daghestan, MV Iron Ore, MV Border Castle, MV Iron Horse, MV Pennyworth, MV Knightsgarth, MV Dukesgarth, MV Hampton Lion, MV August Pacific, MV Amber Pacific and MV Maratha Envoy 1935-1979; certificate of competency as first mate issued by the Ministry of War Transport to James Paul Wood c1944; certificate of proficiency issued to James Paul Wood, attesting that he has satisfactorily completed the Merchant Seaman Gunners' Course 1939; conditions of apprenticeship giving details of wages paid to apprentices by the Rowland and Marwood Steamship Company Ltd 1930s; certificate of efficiency as a lifeboat man issued by the Board of Trade to James Paul Wood 1942; apprenticeship indenture between James Paul Wood of Whitby and the Rowland and Marwood Shipping Company Ltd of Whitby 1931; certificates of satisfactory completion of apprenticeship and of subsequent sea service issued by Headlam and Son, shipowners of Whitby, in regards to James Paul Wood 1935-1942.
