Description:

The series consists of brief nominal rolls (NRs) - up to 1769 - and detailed muster rolls (MRs) and casualty returns (CRs) - arranged alphabetically after 1769 - and of the NCOs and privates of the various European companies and regiments of the Bengal Army. Officers are included in some of the rolls up to 1818. After 1819 each muster roll is usually accompanied by a casualty roll and an account of deceased soldiers' estates. The rolls were compiled by an officer of the company or regiment in question and then forwarded to East India House, but between 1794 and 1815 this method was replaced by a single alphabetical roll of the whole European army, compiled in the Town Major's Office at Fort William.
