Catalogue description This photograph of the wedding of Herman Schwartz and Sarah Pinkow appeared in "The Picture Paper" of Friday March 24th 1911. The caption was "Married by order: Grimsby Alien's Romance." Underneath the photo was printed "Sarah Pinkow, the Roumanian Jewess who was rejected by the Grimsby Immigration Board as an 'undesirable alien' but obtained permission to stay in England on condition that she married within a month, has just fulfilled her pledges by marrying Herman Schwartz, a tailor of Manchester, to whom she had been betrothed in their native Roumania." The bride, bridegroom and wedding party are seen in our photo.
