Arthur Bevington Gillett 1875-1954 was the third son of George and Hannah Elizabeth Gillett (neé Rowntree). He was educated at Oliver's Mount School, Scarborough and at King's College, Cambridge. Before going to Cambridge, he spent time at Oxford in the family bank of Gillett & Co., which after graduating he bought into as a partner, following a loan from his Uncle Joseph Rowntree. Gillett's Bank merged in 1919 with Barclays Bank of which Arthur was made a Director, serving from 1921-1949. Arthur also served as secretary to the Oxford Meeting of the Society of Friends, as the Treasurer to Somerville College and as an Oxford City Councillor for many years. After Arthur's retirement the Gillett's moved from Oxford back to Margaret's home town of Street, Somerset. The GIL collection contains correspondence, journals, papers and photographic material relating to Arthur Bevington Gillett which is arranged in two main sections. Material relating to his pre-married life, to his business activities and to his personal papers is listed at GIL/AB. Material relating to his married life and family activities is listed at GIL/FAM. Historical material (archive, photographic material, objects) from the Gillett and Rowntree Families which was probably inherited from his mother is listed at GIL/HIST
