Sir Michael Hicks was the son of Robert Hicks of Cheapside and his wife Juliana [nee Arthur, later Penn], and became one of the secretaries to William Cecil, Lord Burleigh. He had three brothers, Clement (whose dates of birth and death are not known), Francis (born 1545; his date of death is not known), and Baptist [Viscount Campden]. Sir Michael married Elizabeth Parvish or Purvis [nee Coulson or Colston; Sir Michael was her second husband] in the early 1590s, and they had children as follows: William (1596-1680, later first baronet), Michael (1600-1618), Elizabeth (born 1598; her date of death is not known) and Clement (his dates of birth and death are not known)

 

Sir Michael Hicks was an MP in every Parliament but one between 1584 and his death, representing Truro (1584-1585), Shaftesbury (1588-1589 and 1593), Gatton (1597-1598) and Horsham (1601 and 1604-1611); he was knighted in 1604
