Title: REDBOURNE HALL
Description:

Papers relating to the Redbourne Estate in Lincolnshire, and related properties.

The main Redbourne Estate at various times included property in Atterby, Audleby, Cadney, Prebend of Caistor, Clixby, Fonaby, Hibaldstow, Holton le Moor, Hundon, Ingoldsby, Kingerby, Kirton Lindsey, North Kelsey, Redbourne, Snitterby, Waddingham, all in Lincolnshire. The core estate was assembled by the Style family of Wateringbury, Kent, in the seventeenth century, and was inherited by Mrs Elizabeth Carter by the early eighteenth century.

A smaller estate at Pickworth, Lincolnshire, was assembled by the Armyne family of Osgodby, and passed to the Style family by 1671. After a disputed inheritance, this estate also passed to the Carter family in the early eighteenth century, and was added to the family estates centred on Kinmel, Denbighshire (sold c 1729). The family settled at Redbourne.

Both estates passed to William Beauclerk (who became the 8th Duke of St. Albans in 1816) through his first wife, Charlotte Carter (d 1797). Redbourne Hall became the principal seat of the family until the time of the 10th Duke, and was sold in 1917.

The collection also includes some late eighteenth and early nineteenth century rentals and accounts relating to the Bathafern Estate, in Denbighshire, Carnarvonshire and Anglesey, which was purchased from the Vyner family c 1811.

Further details of the descent and extent of the estate are given in the Archivists' Report 8 (1956-1957), pp 46-51.
