Administrative / biographical background:

William Milburn (1858-1935) and his brother Thomas Ridley Milburn (1862-1943) formed their partnership in 1897. Two of William's sons, William Jr and Stanley Wayman followed him into the practice. Their work on the Sunderland Empire theatre, which was subsequently taken over by Moss Empires gave them the opportunity to work nationally and they were probably the most significant partnership in the town in this respect. Both the junior Milburns became members of the RIBA council. The partnership was dissolved in 1990.
