The society was established in October 1870 and incorporated in 1876. it was known as the Lewes Co-operative Benefit Building Society. The society had been founded by the members of the Lewes Co-operative Industrial and Provident Society (established 1864) and for many years they shared premises at 3-4 West Street. From about 1897 the society had offices at 1 Fisher Street and in 1920 it moved to 11 High Street, the premises formerly occupied by the Lewes Old Dispensary On 1 July 1970 the society absorbed the Hove and South Coast Building Society and on 1 January 1972 the Pelham Building Society Branch offices were opened at 18 Sutton Road Seaford on 1 September 1966, 104 High Street Uckfield on 12 February 1968, 143 London Road Brighton on 20 July 1970 and at Pelham Street in Hastings in the 1970s |
