The Hirst Schools in Ashington have undergone many changes of name and function on the same sites. A school opened in 1896 and in February 1903 was divided into Junior, Senior and Mixed Departments. In 1908 Ashington New Hirst Council Mixed School divided into four deparments; Junior Girls, Senior Girls, Junior Boys, Senior Boys. New Hirst East Council School opened in 1913 for one thousand and sixty two pupils (boys, girls, infants). By 1921 one of the boys classrooms was in use by the girls and in 1922 the girls took over one of the infants classroom and gave the boys classroom back to the boys. In 1928 only seniors and infants remained in the school, the juniors having been transferred to North and South Hirst Council School. By 1933-35 pupils were using accommodation in Hirst Welfare Hut. By 1952 the school was a county infants and by 1974 it became Alexandra County First School. After 1974 Milburn and Cavendish County First Schools shared the Second Avenue Site. |
