This hospital, situated at Appley Bridge, near Wigan, was established by Lancashire County Council as a tuberculosis hospital and officially opened in 1933. It was developed on the Wrightington Hall Estate, purchased by the County Council in 1920.

Administered initially by the County Council's Tuberculosis Committee, from 1948 it was part of the Manchester Regional Hospital Board, with day-to-day administration by the Wrightington Hospital Management Committee. After 1948 the hospital's range expanded to include specialisations in hip and orthopaedic surgery and rheumatology. NHS reforms meant that the hospital was administered from 1974 by the Ormskirk District of the Lancashire Area Health Authority, and from 1982 by the West Lancashire Health Authority. Since 1992 it has operated as the Wrightington Hospital NHS Trust.
