Administrative / biographical background: |
St Charles Church began its life in a temporary iron building built in 1896 to serve the growing population of Gosforth. Prior to this Catholics used as a church and day school a building erected in 1864 and dedicated to St Charles Borromeo in the village of Coxlodge. In 1911 the Church of the Sacred Heart and St Charles was opened for worship. In 1912 a new parish was formed in North Gosforth with its own church, the Church of the Sacred Heart. On the creation of this new parish the church in Gosforth became known as St Charles R C Church. |
