The donor started work at the hospital in 1932 and stayed there for 44 years, rising to Senior Assistant Chief Male Nurse. After 37 years on the nursing staff, he worked part time as a Public Relations Officer. With the appointment of a full time Public Relations Officer, the donor became a special duties officer. The enclosed Brief History of the hospital was compiled by the donor. One of the reasons for siting the hospital at Whalley was the proximity of the site to the Hellifield railway line from which it was possible to make a cutting to the hospital for the conveyance of goods. In World War I a temporary station was built in the heart of the hospital for the conveyance of patients. By World War II the longer rolling stock was unable to negotiate the bend in the line, and patients were disembarked at Preston or Blackburn. The clay from the cutting was used to make the bricks for the hospital building.
