Dated at Hanley. 1531/1/48/2/7, 1531/1/48/2/9 and 1531/1/48/2/10 are all written in the same hand and relate to the marriage settlement for Edward and Isabel Cavill made by Edward's parents. In September John Cavill buys the toft and orchard with three acres, and in December he passes it to trustees, possibly with other land unspecified here. At the time of the wedding, which is to take place in Hanley church, the trustees will pass half the property to the young couple, who will hold it on condition that they care for Edward's parents in their old age. Such contracts sometimes contained detailed maintenance agreements, with food and clothing allowances specified (Dyer, Standardsof Living, 151-6, 175). For John Cavill's own settlement in 1466, see . The Cavills were clearly among the more prosperous tenants of Hanley, holding considerable free land and enjoying the revenues of their own court, formerly that of the Wodeward family. The Cavill family is first seen in 1364 and for over 250 years they were dealing in land, as the charters show. John in 1486 () became a school trustee. In 1614 Francis and John, brothers, now described as yeoman and weaver respectively, sold their capital messuage Woodwarde, along with four closes, their pasture in Heywardesfeilde, their arable in Woodwardesfeilde and five cottages, for all of which they received ð 600; the name is not seen thereafter in Hanley.
