A church probably existed at Prestwich from the 12th century, and the present church dates from about 1450. The parish of Prestwich cum Oldham originally covered the townships of Prestwich, Great Heaton, Little Heaton, Tonge with Alkrington, Pilkington (which included the hamlets of Whitefield, Outwood and Unsworth), Oldham, Chadderton, Crompton and Royton, and until the middle of the 17th century the Oldham area contributed towards bread and wine for St. Mary's, even though a chapel, also dedicated to St. Mary, existed at Oldham from the middle of the 15th century. (See L160/1/14). The next chapel in the parish to be built was at Shaw before 1515, followed by St. Saviour's, Ringley in 1626, St. George's, Unsworth, consecrated in 1730, St. Paul's, Royton, consecrated in 1757, St. Peter's, Oldham, 1768, St. Margaret's, Hollinwood, 1769, All Saints, Stand, 1826, and St. James, Oldham in 1829. All Saints, Stand, was assigned a District from the parish of Prestwich, by Order in Council, 25 February 1829, (London Gazette, 10 July 1829). The Parochial Chapel of Oldham (St. Mary's), St. Peter's, Oldham, St. James's, Oldham, St. Margaret's, Hollinwood, St. Paul's, Royton, and Holy Trinity, Shaw, were assigned Districts, from the parish of Prestwich cum Oldham by Order in Council 4 March 1835, (London Gazette, 5 May 1835). St. Michael's, Tonge with Alkrington, consecrated 1839, was assigned a District by Order in Council, 27 April 1842 (London Gazette, 19 July 1842, from Prestwich parish. St. Paul's, Kersal, was assigned a District, partly from Prestwich, by Order in Council, 8 June 1854 (London Gazette, 16 June 1854). All Saints, Rhodes, was assigned a District, partly from Prestwich, by Order in Council, 28 July 1864 (London Gazette, 2 August 1864). Holy Trinity, Prestolee, consecrated 1863, was assigned a District partly from Prestwich, by Order in Council, 3 March 1883, (London Gazette, 6 March 1883). St. Margaret's, Prestwich, licensed in 1851, and St. George's, Unsworth, were assigned Districts by Order in Council, 19 May 1885 (London Gazette, 22 May 1885, entirely from Prestwich. St. Saviour's, Ringley, was assigned a District, partly from Prestwich by Order in Council, 20 October 1898, (London Gazette, 25 October 1898). St. Hilda's, Prestwich, was assigned a District, partly from Prestwich, by Order in Council, 3 December 1920, (London Gazette, 14 December 1920). St. Gabriel's, Prestwich, was assigned a District from St. Mary's, by Order in Council, 26 July 1926, (London Gazette, 27 July 1926). Part of the parish was added to St. Andrew's, Blackley, by Order in Council, 6 February 1928, (London Gazette, 10 February 1928). A further part was added to St. Paul's, Kersal Moor by Order in Council, 25 July 1947 (London Gazette, 29 July 1947. |
