The Institute of Geological Sciences was formed in 1965 as an amalgamation of the Geological Survey of Great Britain, the Overseas Geological Surveys and the Geological Museum as a component of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In 1984 the Institute was renamed the British Geological Survey and the Geological Museum transferred to the British Museum (Natural History).
