Administrative / biographical background:

Established in 1904 under the terms of the Isolation Hospital Acts, 1893, 1901. Abolished July 1948 in compliance with the National Health service Act, 1946 (Dissolved Authorities) Regulations. Its functions passed to the Gateshead and District Hospitals Management Committee which in 1974 was absorbed into the newly-created Gateshead Area Health Authority.
