Administrative / biographical background: |
North and South Ambersham were both originally tithings of Steep in Hampshire, and neither have ever had a parish church. Until the 19th century their inhabitants would have been expected to go to Steep for baptisms, marriages and burials - although there is little evidence that they did so in modern times. A transcript of the Steep parish registers is available in the West Sussex Record Office. For ecclesiastical purposes South Ambersham was associated with Selham and Easebourne during the last 150 years; and it is worth starting genealogical searches with the registers of these two parishes. South Ambersham became a civil parish in 1844 when it was transferred from Hampshire to Sussex, and was united with Graffham in 1972 |
