Description:

The records show the range of commercial interests and activities of a prosperous local company. Tylers, best known for their 'Relyt' brand-name, had premises throughout the UK as well as in the Irish Republic and Channel Islands. The progress of the company may be charted, though its emergence as a family concern and take-overs of 'risks', to its establishment as a major shoe retailer with much attention paid to promotion and advertising.

 

The advertising scrapbooks and photographs are a valuable record of changing fashion. Sidelights on political history are cost too: the impact of the 'troubles' in Ireland and the German occupation of the Channel Islands are illustrated by DE 3094/586-7 (Easter Rising) DE 3094/591-2 Irish Civil War) and DE 3094/618-633 (German occupation, including a chilling 'Fragebogen', or questionnaire, requiring details - amongst other things - of Jewish directors or owners from 'enemy' companies).
