Administrative / biographical background:

James Knowles was editor of The Contemporary Review, 1870-76, and founded and edited The Nineteenth Century, later The Nineteenth Century and After from 1877 until his death in February 1908. He received the rank of Knight Commander of the Royal Victoria Order in 1903.

 

This list was compiled with the help of Priscilla Metcalf's biography James Knowles, Victorian Editor and Architect (Clarendon Press, 1980).
