Administrative / biographical background:

William Part founded and endowed a grammar school for 12 boys in Hale in 1739. In 1876 the school was reconstituted by Col. J I Blackburne M.P. who built a new classroom and repaired the master's house. The school was then used as the boys' department of Hale National School see SL 449. In 1911 the school became senior mixed, the boys combining with the girls and infants and the pupils redistributed between the two schools as seniors and juniors. The school closed in 1928 and pupils were transferred to Halebank C.E. Primary School
