Administrative / biographical background: |
In 1206 Roger de Lacy gave to Robert Bussell the manor of Leyland. A daughter carried a moiety to the Faringtons who acquired the other moiety by purchase in 1617. Worden was purchased in 1534. Perhaps the most interesting member of the family was William, 1537-1610, who was comptroller of the household of three earls of Derby and was probably Shakespeare Association Bulletin, vol. viii, 1932. the prototype of Shakespeare's Malvolio. Through him a number of Stanley documents are in this collection. Appended are the Farington documents which, through marriage, went to the Huddlestons of Sawston, Cambridgeshire. |
