Administrative / biographical background:

These records relate mainly to Dorchester's present prison on the site in North Square. The prison cost £18,000 and building work was completed in 1795. Prisoners were segregated by their sex and the type of conviction. All prisoners were confined in cells except debtors who were confined in dormitories and had access to a day room.

The previous gaol in Dorchester was situated in High East Street.
