Administrative / biographical background:

Robert Henry Dick was born c.1786 in Calcutta, India. His parents were Dr William Dick and Charlotte MacLaren, both from Perthshire, Scotland. In 1818, he married Elizabeth Anne MacNab and they had three children, William, James and Rose.
Dick served in the Peninsular War, distinguishing himself at Quatre Bras and Waterloo. His service is summarised below: Dec 1800 Ensign, 75th Regiment. Apr 1802 Purchased Lieutenancy, 62nd Regiment. Feb 1804 Lieutenant, 42nd Regiment. Apr 1804 Captain, 78th Regiment. Jul 1808 Major, 42nd Regiment. Jun 1815 Lieutenant Colonel, 42nd Regiment. Jan 1837 Major General, 42nd Regiment. Jun 1845 Colonel, 73rd Regiment.
In 1846 he took command of the 3rd Infantry Division in India and was killed in action on 10 Feb 1846 at Sobraon, Punjab. Dick was buried at Ferozepore and is commemorated in a memorial at Dunkeld Cathedral, Tayside.
