Physical description: 31 series

  • Burgate, Fordingbridge, Hampshire
Administrative / biographical background:

This collection follows on in date after the collection deposited by Mr. Seton Coventry, (1M53). It deals with the period of the Coventry ownership of the Nether Burgate estate. On the death of John Bulkeley Coventry Bulkeley in 1801, his nephew John Coventry, son of the 6th Earl of Coventry came into the estate. It passed to his second son John on his death in 1829 and from him descended to his eldest son John, who died in 1897. Having a large family to provide for, he left his eldest son a third of the proceeds of the sale of the estate. He, however, bought in Burgate House and 100 acres of land which he and his wife held until 1939. The remainder of the estate was then sold by his eldest son and the house is now owned by Imperial Chemical Industries.
