Administrative / biographical background:

Papers relating to the Smyth family of Long Ashton and Christon and the Gorges family of Wraxall came into the possession of Colonel John Codrington of Wraxall on two counts: firstly as a result of his marriage in 1709 to Elizabeth, only daughter and heiress of the late Samuel Gorges of Wraxall (died 1699); and secondly as one of the surviving executors and trustees of the estate of the late Sir John Smyth of Long Ashton and Christon, 3rd Bart., who died in 1741.

On Codrington's death in 1753 the papers were acquired by his nephew and executor, Robert Codrington attorney of Long Ashton, and on the latter's death in November 1764 by his brother-in-law and executor, Oliver Calley attorney of Overtown House in the parish of Wroughton, Wilts. (1710-1774).
