Title: Lydney Park Estate
Description:

Manorial documents, deeds and papers, chiefly of the Lydney Park Estate

The Lydney estate records contain little of a personal nature concerning the Wynter family, but there is a good deal of material about the Forest of Dean and the Wynter iron-mines. There are no documents relating to the Wynters later than Dame Frances Wynter's will, proved 1720/21, and as it happens, there are no Bathurst documents of an earlier date than the original conveyance of the estate.

Besides records of the Wynter and Bathurst families, there are some documents of the Fazakerley, Player, Ettrick, and Hay families, all connected by marriage with the Bathursts, (see pedigree overleaf). The Ettricks (of Wimborne, Dorset) are of special interest in that Wm. Ettrick was one of the two men entrusted with Dame Mary Bankes's estate by the Parliamentary Committee for Dorset, and it was doubtless through him that the papers of Sir John Bankes, Chas. I's Attorney General, came, by way of the families of Player and Bragge, to be found with this collection. The Bragge family records are listed here under the Bathurst section, since they are almost entirely concerned with Charles Bragge, who inherited the Lydney estate from his uncle Poole Bathurst, and in 1804 took his mother's maiden name. He has been referred to throughout as Chas. B. Bathurst, whether ante or post 1804, to distinguish him from his father Chas. Bragge and his son Chas. Bathurst. Charles Bragge Bathurst was in Parliament from 1790 to 1823, Treasurer of the Navy (1801-03), and Secretary-at-War (1803-04) and although there are none of his official papers, there is correspondence arising out of his official functions as well as from his legal work (listed under 'Professional'). The family papers also include a great number of letters from various persons to his wife Charlotte, sister of Henry Addington, Viscount Sidmouth (Prime Minister, 1801-04).

Date: 13th century -1890
Arrangement:

A small proportion of the collection is too fragile for handling. These documents have been listed at the end of the summary in Appendix II, with cross-references where necessary. Appendix I is a calendar of the few medieval deeds forming bundle D421/T4.

Subjects:
  • Wynter family of Lydney Park, Gloucestershire
  • Bathurst family of Lyndey Park, Gloucestershire
Administrative / biographical background:

The manor of Lydney was bought in 1560 from the Earl of Pembroke by Sir Wm. Wynter, Vice-Admiral, (Surveyor of the Navy 1549-89 and Master of Naval Ordnance 1557-89), and added to the estate which his father Jn. Wynter, Paymaster of Henry VIII's Navy, had held in Lydney before. This family spelled their name in various ways - 'Wynter', 'Wyntour', and 'Wintour'; the spelling 'Wynter' has been used here. The Lydney estate passed from Sir William, through Sir Edward and Sir John, (Secretary to Queen Henrietta Maria), to Sir Chas. Wynter, who died in 1698, leaving his widow Frances in possession, there being no male heir. She later married Thomas Neville, and died in 1720. But already in 1718 the estate had been sold to mortgagees, who in their turn conveyed it to Benjamin Bathurst of Mixbury in 1723.
