Administrative / biographical background:

In 1845 the Associated Society of Blacksmiths formed. It had the alternative name of Associated Blacksmiths of Scotland. In 1910 it changed its name to the Associated Blacksmiths and Ironworkers Society. The Blacksmiths' Union joined in 1912 and National United Society of Smiths and Hammermen joined in 1914. In 1920s it changed its name to the Associated Blacksmiths, Forge and Smithy Workers Society. In 1963 it amalgamated with the United Society of Boilermakers and Iron and Steel Shipbuilders to form the Amalgamated Society of Boilermakers, Blacksmiths, Shipbuilders and Structural Workers and later the GMB.
