Description:

Registers of convictions in magistrates court where cases were referred to Quarter Sessions through appeal or for the imposition of sentence (eg under sec.29, Criminal Justice Act 1948; sec.29 Magistrates Courts Act 1952; sec.56 Criminal Justice Act 1956) or borstal training (eg under sec. 10 Criminal Justice Administration Act 1914; sec.20 Criminal Justice Act 1948; sec.28 Magistrates Courts Act 1952). Registers list number, name, offence, court, date of conviction, judgement or result of appeal, date. The first volume, to Easter Session 1915, is a register of all certificates of dismissal and summary convictions as returned by the petty sessions to the Clerk of the Peace and isa continuation of the registers in QS4/4/-. A note after the returns for that Session states that from then on the convictions etc cannot be returned to the Clerk of the Peace quarterly and in alphabetical order in consequence of rule 53 under section 40 of the Criminal Justice Administration Act, 1914, 4& 5 Geo V, cap.58. Thereafter a single sequence of numbers is used for the remainder of the volume and only cases returned to Quarter Sessions for appeal or for sentencing are listed and the decision of Quarter Sessions recorded.
