Administrative / biographical background:

The Company of Curriers, Feltmakers, Armourers and Hatters was established in Newcastle in 1545 and their Ordinary dates from this year. In 1719 the Society made an order that no Quaker should be taken apprentice on pain of forfeiting £100. Their meetings were held in the old Heber Tower in Newcastle until it was purchased by Newcastle Corporation in March 1909 for £300. After this date, Head Meetings were held in the office of Mr J Forster, Lloyds Bank Chambers, Newcastle.
