History: A new hospital was planned just after the Second World War to serve the North Hertfordshire communities of Stevenage, Hitchin, Letchworth and Baldock. The site was reserved as early as 1950. Work took several years to start, as it took time for the land to be purchased, for the planning process to take place in the early 1960s and for actual building to constructed during the late 1960s and ealy 1970s. It received its first inpatient on 18 September 1972 and was officially opened by the Queen Mother on 22 November 1972. It was referred to initially as the New Lister Hospital but lost the prefix New almost immediately, with the old Lister Hospital in Hitchin being re-named Hitchin Hospital. It had all the modern departments to be expected of a general hospital at that time, although it did not open its geriatric and maternity departments until a few years later. From 1974 it came under the North Hertfordshire District Health Authority and the North West Thames Regional Health Authority. In 1991 it became part of the North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, later the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. It provided over 600 beds in the 1990s and 500 in 2009.
