  • NCTEC (Also known as)
Date: 1920-1981
History: In 1848 the Northern Union of Mechanics Institutes was established to provide a common assessment standard for members. This was replaced in 1920 by the Northern Counties Technical Examinations Council (NCTEC), supported by nine northern LEAs and providing examinations for LEA technical colleges and schools.

In 1947, the Northern Advisory Council for Further Education (NACFE) was established to co-ordinate further education provision in the nine northern LEAs. It shared premises with NCTEC.

In 1981, NCTEC and NACFE merged to form the Northern Council for Further Education, which in 1994 was established as a company limited by guarantee, under the name of NCFE.

NCFE's objective was to continue its long established assessment and accreditation role and to extend it nationally. They determine standards of vocational competence and develop competence based standards of vocational qualifications. Their qualifications are offered by further education colleges, adult and community associations and schools.
