History: | Known as Leicestershire's "Mr Archaelogy", Dr McWhirr, from Stoneygate, Leicester, was one of the country's leading authorities on Roman Britain. He was one of the first graduates of archeology from the University of Leicester in 1960. He taught science at Gateway School, Leicester, from 1960 to 1968, and environmental studies at Scraptoft Teacher Training College, later Leicester Polytechnic and now De Montfort University, until 1988. Dr McWhirr joined Leicester University's school of archaeology as director of distance learning in the early 1990s and later honorary fellow in the school of archaeology and ancient history. He hosted his own radio show – Digging Up The Past – on BBC Radio Leicester and was honorary secretary of the Leicestershire Archaeological and Historical Society. Dr Alan McWhirr died on 14 April 2010 at Leicester Royal Infirmary after being diagnosed with cancer. He was 73. |
