History: | Alfred "Archie" Pitman was born in Derbyshire and worked for the "Derby Evening Mail" before moving to Leicester to work as an operator of telegraphy for the "Leicester Evening Mail". In 1935, he was appointed commanding officer of the first Leicester branch of the Royal Naval Wireless Auxiliary Reserve training telegraphists, which later become one of the largest in the country. At the outbreak of war, Pitman was appointed as a Warrant Officer in the RN Reserve and he served throughout the war at home and abroad before transferring to the Royal Navy as a Lieutenant Commander in 1945. He had a subsequent career as General Secretary of the Federation of British Fire Organisations, Chairman of both Beauchamp Parish Council and the Kibworth and Smeeton branch of Harborough Conservative Association. |
