History: Duncan Forbes was a fellow of Clare College and Emeritus reader in the History of Modern Political Thought. Forbes came up to Clare in 1941, reading history and being awarded a degree after five terms on the basis of the wartime degree programme. He was awarded a Military Cross for his activities during WWII before he returned to Clare in 1945. Forbes became particularly well known for his knowledge and work on the Scottish Enlightenment. Forbes was the nephew of Mansfield Forbes who was also a fellow of Clare.
