History: Thomas Bewick was born at Cherryburn, Ovingham, Northumberland in 1753. In 1767 he was apprenticed in Newcastle to Ralph Beilby, silver engraver. After completing his apprenticeship he worked in London for a few months then returned to Newcastle to form the firm of Beilby and Bewick with his former master. The partnership was dissolved in 1798 and Bewick continued to work on his own account until 1812 when he withdrew from the firm, which was continued by his son, Robert, and daughter, Jane. Thomas Bewick died in 1828. In 1790 Bewick and Beilby published the General History of Quadrupeds and in 1798 the first volume of The History of British Birds. Bewick produced the second volume of The History of British Birds in 1804, and another major work, The Fables of Aesop in 1818.
