colleagues; Mason and Stein had known each other for many years with Stein having been one of the contributors to a collection of essays she edited in 1963 entitled "Signs, Signals and Symbols - A Presentation of the British Approach to Speech Pathology and Therapy" (published by Methuen). This book was itself a summary of a conference Mason had organised for the College of Speech Therapists at Stein's suggestion which sought to delineate the British approach to speech therapy.
