History: Published 'Utopia' in 1516. Succeeded Wolsey as Lord Chancellor of England in 1529. Vexed King Henry VIII by his opposition to the relaxation of the heresy laws, and resigned the chancellorship in 1532. Refused to take an oath that should impugn the pope's authority, or assume the justice of the king's divorce from Catherine of Aragon, and was committed to the Tower of London. Found guilty of high treason and executed. Canonized 1935.
