History: Great-grandson of James I (through his mother, the Electress Sophia of Hanover). Elector of Hanover from 1698. In Aug 1714 became king of Great Britain and Ireland, in succession to Anne as Protestant heir of the Stuarts (under the Act of Settlement of 1701 which ensured Protestant succession). Crowned 20 Oct 1714. Died June 1727 and was succeeded by only son, George II.
