Date: 1937-1948
History: Prior to 1937, Burma was a province of British India and was administered by the India Office. In 1937 a separate Burma Office was established when the British separated Burma Province from British India and granted the colony a new constitution calling for a fully elected assembly. Burma was administered separately by the Burma Office and the Secretary of State for India and Burma until 4 January 1948, when Burma became a fully independent nation and the Burma Office was abolished, with responsibility for relations for Burma passing to the Foreign Office.
