History: | The Meat Hygiene Service (MHS) was first established as an executive agency of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) on 1 April 1995, under the supervision of the Meat Hygiene Division; it was transferred to become an agency of the Food Standards Agency from 1 April 2000. The MHS provides a meat inspection service to all licensed fresh meat plants in Great Britain, enforcing the legal standards in the hygiene of meat production and the welfare of animals at slaughter. |
