History: | In 1853, the original School of Musketry was founded and set up on the Kent coast at Hythe, as an 'Establishment for the instruction of the Army in rifle and target practice'. The primary object of the new School was to study military rifle shooting in all its aspects and to pass on the necessary knowledge to carefully selected regimental instructors. In Sept 1854, Hythe became the HQ of the newly inaugurated Corps of Instructors in Musketry, and, except for a period during the Second World War, the School remained at Hythe for 115 years. Colonel Charles Hay, the first commandant, and his staff arrived in mid 1853. The School of Musketry became known all over the world for the excellence of its weapons instruction. In 1919 the School's title was changed to the 'Small Arms School'. |
