History: The Land Transport Corps was formed under Royal Warrant dated 24 Jan 1855 and charged with the land transport of all stores, supplies and necessaries required by the Army in the field. On 31 Dec 1855, the Ambulance Corps was incorporated into the Land Transport Corps. In 1856, on the return to England of this corps from Crimea, certain men were transferred to the new Military Train then about to be formed, and 4869 were discharged. The Military Train was raised under Royal Warrant of 14 Aug 1856 with a view to the more permanent formation of a Land Transport Corps for service at home and in the field; the corps being formed by volunteers from the Land Transport Corps and regiments of the line.
