History: Prior to 1751: originally raised as Irish Regiment; title changed with Colonel's name 1688-1751. 1751-1782: 5th Regiment of Foot; given privilege of wearing Fusilier caps after defeat of division of French Grenadiers at Wilherlmstal in 1762. 1782: became 5th or Northumberland Regiment of Foot; territorial title bestowed by Colonel, Earl Percy.
