Date: 1956-1971
History: Liverpool Crown Court was established under the Criminal Justice Administration Act 1956 following the report of a Departmental Committee on a Central Criminal Court in South Lancashire, 1952 to 1953, which had been appointed to consider the problem of the increase in criminal business in that area. The new court took over the quarter sessions work in Liverpool and the criminal assize work for South Lancashire. Assize cases for the West Derby division of Lancashire were also assigned to Liverpool. In 1972, following the recommendations of the Royal Commission on Assizes and Quarter Sessions, 1966 to 1969, the court was absorbed within the Northern Circuit of the Crown Court of the Supreme Court, under the Courts Act 1971.
